Rejected by her mother after Ana falls in love with another woman, Ana must overcome her previous ideas of what family is and find her own identity. Though she never reconciles the rejection by her mother, she eventually is able to secure her own identity as partner and mother. When Gina - Ana's partner - succumbs to cancer, Ana is left stranded with only her very young son to tether her to any sense of purpose in life. Though on auto-pilot, she is able to continue the routine of everyday living until the night she receives a call to inform her that her mother has died.
Over the course of a thousand miles between New York and Florida, driving with her now adolescent son, Ana relives the miles in memories of the drive when she was a young girl and secure in her place within her family. In addition are the memories of the life she had planned with Gina, one never fully realized.
Through her journey, Ana must face the illusion of her mother to whom her mother really was before finding any peace and forgiveness for either of them.
