The Silver Cord The Lily Lockwood Series Book Two edition by Alison Caiola Romance eBooks Reviews

Review
If you read my review of The Seeds of a Daisy, you know how excited I was to read the second book from Alison Caiola. And I was not disappointed. This book was very different from the first one, where it explored the relationship between mother and daughter. In this one, we watch Lily try to move with her life after losing her mother and becoming a mother. She is trying to also move on from Robbie, the man she loves but is on a medical mission in Africa, but she quickly learns he has been kidnapped, and the action really starts. This book got my heart beating fast, as we try to rescue Robbie from terrorists with Lily and the C.I.A. and Navy SEALs. I was not expecting this from book two, but it was really spectacular. I can’t imagine the research that was put into this book, and I give major kudos to Caiola for writing such an adventure book. Highly recommend both reads to you.
In the second of her Lily Lockwood series, Caiola has presented us with enough back-story from the initial offering, The Seeds of a Daisy, to make the follow up novel very much a standalone. We catch up with actress Lily as she is being presented with her first Tony Award. Her fame brings her back in to the arms of her former actor flame, Jamie Fleming, with whom she has parented her toddler daughter, Daisy Rose.
Her soulmate, and past lover, physician Robbie Rosen has been off in Africa on a medical mission and not been in close contact for a while, and while Lily knows Jaime is really nothing more than a flame she has gotten lonely. Reality is brought back to her with a jolt when Robbie’s family received a ransom note when it is discovered that he and two other physicians had been kidnapped by Al-Shabaab, a faction of Al Qaeda. The bodies of the others have been located. Lily agrees to fund a mission to rescue him at all costs, including putting her own life on the line by flying to Somalia, while the former CIA agent running the show plans the operation
Caiola takes us into the view point of Robbie and how he is being beaten by his captors and (spoiler alert) forced to harvest AIDS infested organs to donate to American donors in an act of terrorism. Not knowing help is on the way Robbie is planning his suicide rather than help the terrorists. When two CIA wanted terrorists are seen on drone at the site of the rescue the government steps in, deploys the SEALS, but will the cavalry arrive in time to rescue Robbie and reunite Daisy with her true love?
Life as a famous actress isn't as easy as it looks. Lily Lockwood has found success on film and on stage, but her personal life is in tatters. Not only is she still in mourning for her mother, but she's also a new mother who left the baby's father after he cheated. Now, he wants to return to her life, but her heart is with a handsome doctor named Robbie – who also happens to be the adoptive brother of her mother's firstborn, given up at birth. As if this tangle of personal drama isn't enough, Robbie's mission to Somalia with Doctors Without Borders takes a disastrous turn, leaving Lily to wonder if she'll ever get a chance with the man who could be the love of her life.
The title of The Silver Cord refers to a story-within-a-story that Robbie tells Lily in a flashback, about two lovers separated in the Holocaust. As one said to the other, no matter what, there would always be a silver cord tying her heart to his. This is an apt title for the second Lily Lockwood story, since even though Robbie and Lily share very little page-time, the bond between them is palpable through Lily's longing and ruminations.
Like the first book, The Seeds of a Daisy, The Silver Cordoffers a glimpse behind the scenes of a seemingly glamorous life. Despite the limelight, Lily remains down-to-earth in her day-to-day dealings, treating her glitzy career the way any hard worker would treat a job. The attention and wealth are all superficial trappings to her, and what really matters are her personal relationships. Though being famous has its perks, it can't help her when she reaches her most desperate hour. Caiola portrays Lily with remarkable vulnerability and humanity, depicting the person behind the perfect face the tabloids take for granted.
To say that The Silver Cord is an emotional rollercoaster would be an understatement. The story is full of drama as it follows Lily's attempts to get her life in order and then, later, to find a way to rescue Robbie from the clutches of ruthless terrorists. While The Seeds of a Daisy was pretty straightforward contemporary fiction, The Silver Cord has a dash of thriller thrown in. Lily finds herself dealing with a situation her life as an actress could never have prepared her for, and we're privy to her deepest fears and anxieties.
Caiola has a wonderful way of bringing emotion to life on the page. In addition to seeing what happens next to Lily, we also learn more about other characters introduced in The Seeds of a Daisy, in particular Robbie and David, Lily's half-brother who was given up for adoption before Lily was born. All in all, The Silver Cord is an enjoyable follow-up to The Seeds of a Daisy and an entertaining read.
Wonderful story, can't wait for the 3rd book!
Alison has done it again! This time combining the intrigue of a terrorist kidnapping with a love story within a love story. The Silver Cord is aptly titled as the story "unwinds" and encircles the reader, pulling you into it. I could not put it down until I finished reading it. Sadly, I have to wait for book three to escape into Lily's world again.
I need to go on record as saying that I never give anything 5 stars and; therefore, 4 stars from me is a great review. I read the "Silver Cord" a week after finishing Alison's first book in the series. I found this book an even quicker read. I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of research that must have gone into both books. My only disappointment is that I have to wait until 2016 for book 3.
I loved this story! Caiola writes an exciting plot with well-developed characters (whom I had already become attached to from Book One, "The Seeds of a Daisy"). It's a suspenseful love story with twists and turns. Her research was very well done and I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I didn't want it to end. I hope there will be more books from Caiola. I'm hooked!
